Bleeding
Experiencing minor bleeding or seeing red saliva in the first 24 hours after your surgery is quite common. If you encounter heavy bleeding, bite down on a gauze pad over the incision site for thirty minutes. If the bleeding continues or is difficult to manage, please reach out to our office.
Swelling
Swelling is a common response following any surgical procedure. To manage swelling effectively, apply ice to the area of the face where the implants were placed. Use ice consistently while awake for the initial 36 hours post-surgery. After 2-3 days, transition from using ice to a warm compress and gently massage the area to help reduce swelling.
Diet
After getting dental implants, it's essential to consume ample liquids. Steer clear of hot foods and drinks. On the surgery day, consume soft foods and liquids, and gradually progress to a regular diet as you feel at ease. Refrain from chewing directly on the implant site for 2-3 months after the surgery.
Pain
We advise patients to start taking their pain medications once the effects of the anesthesia begin to fade.
For mild to moderate pain, you can take one or two tablets of Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol. You may also consider taking two to three 200 mg tablets of Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) every 4-6 hours.
If the pain is more intense, use any prescribed narcotic pain medications from your surgeon and follow the prescribed dosage. Be aware that these prescription pain relievers may induce drowsiness and can slow down your reflexes. Therefore, while on prescription pain medication, refrain from driving, operating machinery, and consuming alcohol.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are essential for preventing infection, so it's important to take them as prescribed. If you develop a rash or any other adverse reactions while on antibiotics, stop taking them and reach out to our office with any concerns or questions.
Oral Hygiene
Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for the healing process. On the evening of your surgery, use the Peridex Oral Rinse before going to bed, if it has been prescribed. Starting from the day after surgery, use Peridex twice daily, after breakfast and before bedtime. Swish the rinse in your mouth for at least 30 seconds and then spit it out. Additionally, rinse your mouth with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) at least four or five times a day, particularly after meals.
Brush your teeth and any healing abutments as usual. Exercise caution and be gentle when brushing around the surgical sites.
Activity
The day after your surgery, it's recommended to limit physical activity. Excessive physical activity could lead to bleeding or increased throbbing. Additionally, after surgery, your usual dietary intake may be affected, potentially causing weakness or dizziness during exercise.
Wearing Your Prosthesis
Avoid using partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures for at least 10 days following surgery unless otherwise approved by your surgeon. This precaution is to support your recovery process. If you have any questions, please contact our office directly.
