Some teeth may not erupt in their normal position and may end up in deeper areas of the jaw, referred to as impacted teeth. Wisdom teeth are among the most common examples of impacted teeth, but canines and other teeth can also be affected. Some of these teeth may require extractions, while others may need exposure with or without bonding to guide them into the desired position, often in collaboration with an orthodontist.
These impacted teeth are particularly common in developing patients. The surgical procedure to manage them is coordinated with the orthodontist and must be timed according to the unique situation of the patient.
The details of each of these procedures are unique to each patient and will be thoroughly reviewed with the patient, and their family when applicable, prior to the procedure.
